These paintings, from 1984, were a case of spontaneous combustion. In early February, I was newly single and enormously frustrated by the "singles scene" in which I was now also working as a bartender. I woke on a Sunday morning, about two hours after having fallen asleep, grabbed a piece of paper, attached it to my drawing board and started painting.
In late April, while about two thirds through the series, I went to Mazatlan, Mexico. And, yes I met someone. I finished the series when I returned home. I then became fascinated by what I had recorded. As the black dissipates, the colour yellow—which in my mind was associated with the other person—is the first colour to show up in a large amount. Though we lived in different countries (almost 3,000 km (1,860 mi) apart), it appears the "relationship" started before the two participants met face to face.
Apparently they exude the energy of the moment.
Originals are roughly 44” x varying heights (30” > 35”) (111.8 cm x 76.2 > 89 cm). They are mixed media — including pigmented ink, grease pencil, latex floor paint, clear acrylic medium, chalk pastel, and collage — on two kinds of acid-free paper (black drawing and white water colour). They have a decal edge right and left and a torn edge top and bottom.
I still have all of the originals, except for the last one which was given to my accomplice. They are available for rent.
Prints will be available at one third size: 14.7" x 11" (37.3 cm x 27.9 cm).
